Ariel 1942 W/NG (Desert Sand)

Ariel 1942 W/NG (Desert Sand)
This genuine WW2 Ariel W/NG was bought by us in a largely restored condition. The previous owner had almost finished the restoration but had then lost interest and it therefore needed finishing and commissioning by us.
The motorcycle has frame numbers is XG 32741 and the Dating Certificate supplies by the seller confirms it was part of a contract for 3,500 W/NG’s dated 12th March 1942 and delivered to Chilwell Ordnance Depot between 29th October 1942 and 5th April 1943. Frame numbers were XG 31,751 to 35,250 and were allocated C numbers C 4812104 to C4815603. The tank numbers were allocated at random within the contract. The Dating Certificate confirms this motorcycle was dispatched from the factory on 7th December 1942.
The bike comes with a current V5C, registration XXG 489 and is registered as a Historic Vehicle and is therefore free from road tax and MOT exempt. The registration number is recorded as being non-transferable.
As part of the commissioning, we have cleaned and adjusted both the carburettor and magneto and the bike now starts, runs and rides well and all gears engage freely. The wiring is complete and the lights, brake and horn all work. The oil pump has been removed and cleaned and the oil returns freely to the oil tank. The petrol tank has also been flushed; corks in the petrol tap replaced and new rubber petrol pipes fitted. There is no speedo or field stand fitted and the bike is fitted with one toolbox rather than the usual two.
The Ariel W/NG is a rare motor cycle and far fewer have survived than the equivalent BSA M20 or Matchless G3L. This is because they were sold off soon after the war to a transport hungry public.
