This original WD Matchless G3L saw 17 year’s service with the British Army. It was supplied to the War Office under contract S.2604 dated 3rd March 1943 and was not released from the Army until it was sold at Ruddington on 8th November 1960. Given that it was made in 1943 it is highly likely that it would have seen action in Normandy. My own G3L is from the same contract was found in a German Bunker in Normandy after the war. The original army registration number or “C” number that would have been painted on the petrol tank was C 5480998. After the war the army changed the registration system in 1948 and it was then given the number 06 YB 30.
The bike comes with a current V5C, registration 988 XUX and is registered as a Historic Vehicle and is therefore free road tax and MOT exempt. Until recently the bike belonged to a friend of ours and was previously owned by his Father. The V5C records that there were 3 former keepers since July 2010.
The bike has retained many of its War time features including its 41/G3L engine, original WD speedometer, T position lighting switch, rear carrier and pannier racks. The pannier bags are probably reproductions. We have given this bike a thorough service and in doing so have removed the head and barrel and have ground the valves in. It is fitted with a high compression slipper piston bored out to +60 and really cracks on.
